André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry
André-Ernest-Modeste Grétry (1741-1813) was a prominent French composer, conductor, and publisher. Born in Liège (now in Belgium), he showed early musical talent and went on to study composition in Rome and Paris. Grétry’s career flourished as he composed over 50 operas, with notable works such as “Le Tableau parlant” and “Zémire et Azor.” His masterpiece, “Richard Coeur de Lion,” showcased his talent for French Romantic opera. Grétry’s music was praised for its finesse and melodic grace, and he played a crucial role in shaping French opéra comique. His contributions earned him widespread recognition, including honours from Napoleon and the title of inspector of the conservatoire during the French Revolution. Grétry’s legacy endures, with a commemorative statue in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art
