Domenico Zipoli
Domenico Zipoli (1688-1726) was an Italian composer from the Baroque era, taught by Alessandro Scarlatti for a short period. He excelled as an organist and was renowned for his keyboard music. Zipoli settled in Rome and later embarked on a missionary journey to Buenos Aires in 1717, where he served as music director in a Jesuit Church. Though he completed his training as a priest, he was never formally ordained.
Later, Zipoli moved to Córdoba, in the Viceroyalty of Peru (present-day Argentina), and became a Jesuit. He dedicated himself to teaching music among the Guaranà people in the Reductions of Paraguay. He is recognised as the most accomplished musician among Jesuit missionaries.
In his early years, Zipoli received basic musical training in Prato, Italy, and later became a pupil of renowned musicians like Giovani Maria Casini in Florence and Alessandro Scarlatti in Naples, Bologna, and Rome. During this period, he composed oratorios such as “San Antonio di Padova” (1712) and “Santa Caterina, Virgine e Martire” (1714). He was appointed organist at the Church of the Gesù in Rome, holding a prestigious position. Notably, he completed his most famous work, “Sonate d’intavolatura per organo e cimbalo,” at the beginning of the following year.
