Isang Yun
Isang Yun (1917-1995) was born in South Korea and received his early musical training in Korea and Japan. His opposition to the Japanese occupation led to imprisonment during World War II. After gaining freedom, he taught music at Korean schools and universities. In 1956, he went to Europe to study in Paris and Berlin under Boris Blacher and attended the International Courses at Darmstadt.
Becoming a West German citizen in 1971, Yun lived in West Berlin from 1964. The Korean Park regime abducted him from Germany in 1967, imprisoning him until 1969. After his release, he engaged in political activism for the restoration of democracy in Korea.
Upon returning to Germany, Yun taught at the Hannover State College of Music and became a professor of composition at the State College of Arts in Berlin from 1970 to 1985. He held memberships in the Hamburg and Berlin Academies of Arts and was an honorary doctor at Tübingen University and was an honorary member of the ISCM. Among his distinctions was the Großes Bundesverdienstkreuz.
