Carl Vine
Carl Vine AO is a renowned Australian composer, celebrated for an impressive orchestral catalogue comprising eight symphonies and thirteen concertos. His piano compositions are frequently performed worldwide, and over 60 CDs featuring his music regularly grace Australian radio airwaves. In addition to his contributions to modern art music, Vine has tackled diverse projects, including arranging the Australian National Anthem and composing for the Olympic Games’ Closing Ceremony in 1996 (Atlanta).
Born in Perth, Vine received piano training from Stephen Dornan and studied composition under John Exton at the University of Western Australia. In 1975, he relocated to Sydney, where he embarked on a dynamic career as a freelance pianist and composer, collaborating with a wide array of ensembles, theatre groups, and dance companies.
Among his notable works are the Piano Sonata (1990) and Poppy (1978), crafted for the Sydney Dance Company, as well as the Choral Symphony (No.6, 1996), commissioned by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. The ABC Classics double-CD set Carl Vine: The Complete Symphonies features his first six symphonies performed by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. His chamber music is showcased on three discs from Tall Poppies Records.
From 2000 to 2019, Vine served as the Artistic Director of Musica Viva Australia, the world’s largest chamber music entrepreneur. Concurrently, he held the Artistic Directorship of the Huntington Estate Music Festival (since 2006) and the Musica Viva Festival (Sydney, since 2008). Since 2014, he has served as a Senior Lecturer in Composition at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
In 2014, Carl Vine was honoured with the appointment as an Officer of The Order Of Australia (AO) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
