About

This four-movement work for flute, discovered among Vaughan Williams’s manuscripts after his death, seems to have been composed in 1913 for the French flautist Louis Fleury.

The composer’s experimentation with bitonality, which would later become a hallmark of his works, is evident in this piece. The flute part is by turn expressive and virtuosic, making it an excellent showcase for more advanced flautists, especially those looking for British repertoire. Scores and parts for the string orchestra accompaniment are available on hire.

Ralph Vaughan Williams

Ralph Vaughan Williams, a highly significant composer in English music and a prominent 20th-century symphonist, was born on October 12, 1872, in Down Ampney. He grew up in Surrey, and attended Charterhouse School, the Royal College of Music, and Trinity College, Cambridge, studying under Charles Stanford, Hubert Parry, Max Bruch in Berlin, and Maurice Ravel in Paris.

A pioneer in collecting folk songs and carols from rural singers, he contributed hymn tunes to The English Hymnal. His close friendship with Gustav Holst influenced both composers’ development. During World War I, Vaughan Williams served as a wagon orderly and later as a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery.

His outlook shifted from youthful atheism to cheerful agnosticism, drawing inspiration from various poets and writers. He married Adeline Fisher in 1897 and Ursula Wood in 1953. In 1935, he received the Order of Merit but declined a knighthood. He passed away on August 26, 1958, with his ashes interred near Purcell in Westminster Abbey.

Throughout his prolific life, Vaughan Williams composed a wide range of music, including nine symphonies, concertos, operas, chamber, ballet, and film music, songs, and choral works. His repertoire encompassed popular pieces like The Lark Ascending, Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus, The Wasps Overture, and the English Folk Song Suite.
