About
Born in Marseille, Tomasi had a deep connection to his Corsican heritage, as his parents hailed from La Casinca in Corsica. Although his parents encouraged him to pursue his musical studies, Tomasi’s childhood passion lay in becoming a sailor. He spent summers with his Grandmother in Corsica, where he immersed himself in the rich tradition of Corsican music and learned traditional songs.
Tomasi’s love for his Corsican roots resonates in his compositions, often incorporating themes and influences from the songs he learned during those summers. This is particularly evident in “The Little Corsican Goatherd,” a captivating piece written for flute and piano or harp accompaniment. Through this composition, Tomasi beautifully weaves together the nostalgic melodies and enchanting rhythms of Corsican music, paying homage to his cultural heritage.
Composer-Henri Tomasi
Tomasi (1901-1971) was a prolific 20th Century French classical composer, pianist and conductor. In 1921, he commenced his studies at the Conservatoire de Paris studying with Gaubert, Vincent d’Indy, Georges Caussade, and Paul Vidal. In 1927, he won both the “Grand Prix de Rome” and a unanimous first prize in conducting. He immediately began a double career as a composer and a conductor. The majority of his works were for wind instruments, but he also composed concerti for violin and viola.
