Dame Ethel Mary Smyth
Smyth (April 22, 1858 – May 9, 1944) was a British composer known for her diverse musical style, encompassing both traditional and experimental elements.
Coming from a military background, Smyth received her education at the Leipzig Conservatory, where she received support and encouragement from renowned composers Johannes Brahms and Antonín Dvořák. Her talent gained recognition with the release of her powerful Mass in D (1893). However, her most celebrated composition is The Wreckers (1906), which became widely regarded as the finest English opera of its era. Demonstrating her strong involvement in the suffrage movement, Smyth composed the March of the Women (1911). Additionally, her comic opera, The Boatswain’s Mate (1916), enjoyed significant success.
Throughout her career, Smyth penned a multi-volume autobiography titled Impressions That Remained (1919-1940), offering insights into her personal and artistic journey.
