Mátyás Seiber-Composer
Hungarian composer, Mátyás Seiber (1905-1960) grew up in Budapest, where he studied with Kodály at the Music Academy to study, developing an interest in medieval plainchant and folksongs.
He left Hungary in 1927, setting up the first academic study of jazz in Frankfurt in tandem with lecturing. In 1930, he travelled aboard a ship performing with a string quartet, eventually settling in London. Here, he taught at Morley College, forming and training his own choir ‘The Dorian Singers’. Renowned for his compositional teaching, Seiber attracted students from across Europe.
His compositions were greatly influenced by many styles including jazz, film, serial music, Schoenberg, folksong and the Hungarian traditions of Bartók and Kodály.
