About
Schubert’s “Ave Maria” is a composition inspired by Walter Scott’s narrative poem, The Lady of the Lake. It is part of Schubert’s Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom See and was first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff. The piece captures a scene from the poem where Ellen Douglas, the Lady of the Lake, sings a prayer to the Virgin Mary while Roderick Dhu, the chieftain of Clan Alpine, prepares for battle.
The opening words and refrain, “Ave Maria,” led to the misconception that Schubert originally composed the melody for the traditional Roman Catholic prayer. The song holds a significant place within Schubert’s Opus 52, which features seven songs from The Lady of the Lake.
“Ave Maria” gained further recognition through its inclusion in Walt Disney’s film Fantasia, where it was beautifully intertwined with Modest Mussorgsky’s Night on Bare Mountain.
Franz Peter Schubert
Franz Schubert (1797-1828), an Austrian composer, was a prominent figure in Classical and Romantic music. He received early music education from his father and brother Ignaz and later studied with renowned musicians including Wenzel Ruzicka and Antonio Salieri.
He displayed exceptional talent in melody and harmony, particularly in his songs (lieder) and chamber music. In 1814, he composed his masterpiece “Gretchen am Spinnrade” (Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel), which marked the creation of the German lied.
Notable compositions include Symphony No. 9 in C Major (The Great; 1828), Symphony in B Minor (Unfinished; 1822), masses, and piano works.
He composed over six hundred secular vocal works, seven complete symphonies, sacred music, operas, incidental music and a vast array of chamber and piano music.
