About
The Carnival of the Animals (Le Carnaval des animaux) is a delightful musical composition, encompassing fourteen movements, including the beloved piece “The Swan,” created by the renowned French musician Camille Saint-Saëns.
Initially designed for private enjoyment, this enchanting work, with a duration of approximately 25 minutes, was performed by two pianos and a small ensemble. However, during his lifetime, Saint-Saëns made the decision to abstain from public performances of the piece, fearing that its lightheartedness might undermine his standing as a serious composer. Nevertheless, following his passing, the suite was published in 1922, and its public performance in the same year was met with enthusiasm, solidifying its position as one of his most cherished compositions.
Moreover, it is noteworthy that while the original version showcased a chamber ensemble, orchestras worldwide have adopted the practice of performing the suite with a full complement of string instruments.
Notably, the popular ‘Swan’ movement from this suite, which is part of the larger composition, has been skillfully arranged for two flutes and piano.
Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns
Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) was a renowned French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. His prolific body of works includes 14 operas, songs, concerti, chamber music, and sacred music, most notably ‘Symphony No.3’ and ‘Carnival of the Animals’.
As a child prodigy, he gave his first recital in 1846 and studied at the Paris Conservatoire. He became the organist at the Church of the Madeleine in 1857. In 1871, he co-founded the National Society of Music. Le Rouet d’Omphale and Danse Macabre are among his widely performed symphonic poems. His opera Samson et Dalila achieved success after its premiere in 1890.
Saint-Saëns upheld a conservative ideal of French music and left a lasting impact on the musical scene.
