About
Camille Saint-Saëns composed the Romance in D♠major, Op. 37, for flute with piano or orchestral accompaniment in March 1871, shortly after the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War.
Following the signing of the Armistice of Versailles on 28th January 1871, the Paris Commune assumed power in Paris on 18th March. Concerned for his safety, Saint-Saëns sought exile in London. Despite the challenging circumstances, he managed to create the Romance, a captivating piece that exudes a sense of tranquillity and remains untouched by the context in which it was composed.
Dedicated to Amédée de Vroye, a highly regarded flautist at the time, the composition experienced its premiere in mid-1871 in Baden-Baden, Germany, with de Vroye and Saint-Saëns as the featured performers. This was primarily due to the political upheaval in France. Subsequently, the piece received its Paris premiere on 6th April 1872, at a Société Nationale de Musique concert held at the Salle Pleyel. The performance was delivered by Paul Taffanel and Saint-Saëns, who shared a close friendship, with Saint-Saëns even assuming the role of godfather to Taffanel’s daughter. Taffanel would become the true champion of the Romance, frequently showcasing it throughout the years with numerous performances.
