Rudall & Rose Rosewood Flute-C9045
Rudall & Rose Rosewood Flute-C9045
About
Crafted in 1843, this flute stands as one of the earliest examples of British Boehm flutes, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of flute design. Produced by the esteemed firm of Rudall & Rose, established in London in 1822 by flautist George Rudall and flute maker John Mitchell Rose, this instrument reflects their commitment to innovation and craftsmanship.
Unique features of this flute include its absence of a B flat thumb key, but the presence of baroque ring keys, and an open G# system. What sets it apart is its double-walled head joint, with a wooden outer layer and riser, complemented by a silver inner layer. This construction enhances both the instrument’s resonance and its tonal richness while maintaining the sound qualities of a wooden instrument.
Innovatively, this flute incorporates a mechanism for tuning by rotating the crown, which adjusts the length of the head joint. This extends its capabilities for achieving optimal pitch and tone.
Condition
Although this flute requires restoration to fully realise its historical and musical potential in playing, it has a place as a pioneering example of British Boehm flutes which makes it a prized artifact for collectors and musicians alike.

Rudall & Rose (Flute Maker)
Rudall & Rose, later Rudall, Rose & Carte, played a pivotal role in the history of flute-making. Their collaboration with Theobald Boehm resulted in holding the British patent for Boehm’s 1847 cylindrical flute, which set new standards in flute acoustics and mechanics. This partnership laid the groundwork for subsequent developments in flute design, influencing makers like Louis Lot and shaping the trajectory of flute craftsmanship worldwide.
