Miklós Rózsa
Composer, Miklós Rózsa (1907-1995) was born in Budapest. He grew up surrounded by the music of the Palóc, the indigenous Magyar people, which greatly influenced his musical personality. Rózsa’s interest in music began early, and he studied the violin, viola, and piano.
His admiration for Bartók and Kodály, who discovered authentic Hungarian folk music, inspired him to embrace an authentic Hungarian nationalist style in his compositions. Despite facing resistance in Hollywood, Rózsa broke new ground with his score for “Double Indemnity,” introducing asperities of rhythm and harmony.
Throughout the late 1930s, Rózsa experienced success both in the film and concert music worlds. He won prestigious awards and settled in Hollywood, where he composed scores for major productions. His most popular works include the scores for “Spellbound,” “A Double Life,” and “Ben-Hur,” which earned him three Academy Awards.
Rózsa’s film career thrived in the 1950s, but he also contributed significantly to serious music, creating works like the Concerto for Strings and the Violin Concerto. Despite his busy schedule, he found time to conduct and record many of his compositions. Later in life, Rózsa experienced a renaissance with a renewed appreciation for his film scores, and he continued composing solo pieces even after suffering a stroke.
In 1995, Miklós Rózsa passed away, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable contributions to both film and concert music.
