Romberg
Andreas Jakob Romberg (1767-1821) was a German violinist and composer.
Born in Vechta, Duchy of Oldenburg, he learned violin from his father, Gerhard Heinrich Romberg, and gave his first public performance at six. He toured Europe and played in the Münster Court Orchestra. His cousin was a cellist and composer, Bernhard Romberg.
In 1790, Romberg joined the court orchestra in Bonn, led by Kapellmeister Andrea Luchesi, where he met Beethoven. He moved to Hamburg in 1793, joining the opera orchestra. His first opera, Der Rabe, debuted in 1794, and he also composed his version of Messiah (Der Messias).
After time in Paris, he returned to Hamburg, becoming a key figure in its music scene. In 1815, he replaced Louis Spohr as music director at the Duke’s court in Gotha, where he remained until his death on 10 November 1821.
