Carl Reinecke

Reinecke (1824-1910) was born in Altona and was a prominent German pianist, composer, conductor, and teacher. He studied with Mendelssohn, Robert Schumann and Liszt and became a highly respected and influential musician of his time.

From 1846-1848, Reinecke was Court Pianist for Christian VIII in Copenhagen. In 1851, he became a professor at the Cologne Conservatory and later Academic, Musical director and conductor of the Singakademie at Breslau. From 1860-1895, Reinecke was Director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra concerts in Leipzig. In 1897, he assumed the role of Director at the Leipzig Conservatory.

Reinecke’s compositional repertoire encompassed orchestral works, including symphonies, overtures, and concertos, as well as pieces for piano, voice, chamber ensembles, and the stage.

Reinecke’s flute works include the popular ‘Undine Sonata Op.167, Concerto Op.283 for flute and Orchestra and his Ballade Op.288 for flute and orchestra.
