Sergei Rachmaninov-Composer
Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a prominent composer and pianist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in Russia, Rachmaninoff became the last great figure of the Russian Romantic tradition. He is best known for his exquisite piano concertos and the renowned piece for piano and orchestra, “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” (1934). Rachmaninov’s musical journey began with rigorous piano studies under Nikolay Zverev in Moscow before he took up a place at the Moscow Conservatoire.
His compositions, such as the haunting “Prelude in C-sharp Minor” and the mesmerising “Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor,” propelled him to fame. Despite personal challenges and the Russian Revolution, Rachmaninov’s creativity endured, producing remarkable works like the evocative “Symphony No. 2 in E Minor” and the enchanting “Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor.” His legacy as a masterful composer and virtuoso pianist continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
