Johann Joachim Quantz
German Baroque composer, Quantz was a flautist, flute maker and teacher of Frederick the Great of Prussia. He composed a vast number of works including over 300 flute sonatas/concertos. Quantz also wrote ‘On Playing the Flute’ and influenced a ‘School of flute playing’ for a century. He was one of the first professional flute players in 18th-century Europe. He learnt many instruments but began his first professional post as an oboist in the Dresden Court Ensemble. In 1719, he began to specialise in the flute spending much of his time travelling in Italy, France and England before returning to Dresden. In 1741 he served Frederick the Great of Prussia where he composed, performed, and made flutes for the king.
