Jules Pillevestre (real name: Pillevesse) (1837-1903) was a 19th-century French composer and conductor. He pursued his musical education at the Paris Conservatoire, where he excelled in various disciplines. Jules received awards in music theory (1852) and harmony (1856) under the guidance of Napoléon Henri Reber and also studied cello (1856), counterpoint, and fugue (1857) with Michele Carafa. In 1858, he participated in the Prix de Rome competition with his cantata titled “Jephté,” earning an honourable mention.
As a conductor, Jules Pillevestre made his mark in Paris, notably at the Théâtre du Vaudeville. Besides his conducting career, he composed instrumental works and military music under the name Pillevestre. Additionally, he created a one-act operetta titled “Robinson Crusoé,” which premiered at the Fantaisies-Parisiennes in 1866.
