Giovanni Battista Pergolesi
Pergolesi (1710-1736) was an Italian composer known for his notable intermezzo, “La serva Padrona” (“The Maid Turned Mistress”), which became one of the most celebrated stage works of the 18th century.
Originally from Pergola, his family name was Draghi, but they adopted the name Pergolesi after moving to Jesi. Pergolesi gained recognition as a violinist during his time at the Conservatorio dei Poveri in Naples around 1720. In 1732, he was appointed as the maestro di cappella to the prince of Stigliano in Naples.
Pergolesi’s health declined, and in 1736, at the age of 26, he sought refuge in the Franciscan monastery in Pozzuoli near Naples. It was there that he completed his renowned work, the Stabat Mater, before passing away in extreme poverty.
