Johann Christoph Pepusch
Johann Christoph Pepusch (1667-1752), a German composer, played a significant role in the music scene of England during George Frideric Handel’s active years there.
At the age of 14, Pepusch secured a position at the Prussian court after studying theory and organ music. He remained there until 1697 and later travelled to the Netherlands. By 1700, he had settled in England. In 1713, he obtained a doctorate in music from the University of Oxford and became the music director to the Duke of Chandos. During the 1720s, he held the position of music director at Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre, where he composed several masques and arranged tunes and overtures for John Gay’s “Beggar’s Opera” (1728) and its sequel “Polly” (unperformed until 1777).
In 1737, Pepusch became the organist at the Charterhouse. Besides his teaching activities, he amassed an impressive library of music books and scores. His interest in Renaissance and ancient Greek and Roman music strongly influenced early musical antiquarianism in England, contributing to the publication of William Boyce’s anthology “Cathedral Music” from 16th- and 17th-century England. Pepusch also played a role in the establishment of the Academy of Ancient Music, which performed works by 16th-century composers, and he edited some works of Arcangelo Corelli.
Pepusch composed numerous cantatas, concerti, and chamber music works.
