About
Commissioned by the Dutch music-lover De Jean, quartet No. 1 in D Major K285 is the best known of the three “Mannheim” flute quartets. The virtuosic first movement is concertante in character throughout. The arioso central section and the exuberant closing Rondeau treats the flute as a solo instrument. The original manuscript has been classified as lost since 1945. The dynamics and articulation provided by the sources are few and far between. In this respect, the present edition for flute and piano largely follows the source material.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756 and was a hugely influential composer of the Classical era. He began composing music at the age of 5 and was a child prodigy. He was also extremely competent on the keyboard and violin. Mozart composed over 600 works including symphonies, chamber works, operas, and keyboard works amongst a huge array of other works. Mozart composed works for flute including a concerto for flute and harp, a concerto in G Major and D Major, an Andante in C and flute & string quartets.
