Mower Sonata for Piccolo and Piano
Mower Sonata for Piccolo and Piano
Publisher-Itchy Finger Publications
About
Written in 2002, this piccolo sonata is comprised of 3 movements, lasting 16 minutes. A welcome addition to the repertoire of this often neglected instrument.
About
The commissioned piccolo and piano sonata, composed in 2002, unveils the true potential of the often underestimated piccolo. While the instrument is known for its piercing top register, this sonata showcases its charming woody tones in the bottom range and the commanding yet sweet qualities of the middle register. Incorporating jazz elements, the brisk first movement explores the piccolo’s agility and fluidity, transitioning into a jazzy groove section. Movement Two highlights the lower end of the instrument, with a piano solo featuring lush jazz harmonies. The last movement serves as a fast-paced showcase for both instruments, featuring spiky phrases and flowing passages. Stewart McIlwham’s masterful rendition, accompanied by Tim Carey on piano, captures the style, accuracy, groove, and beauty of this sonata.
