Marin Marais
Marin Marais (1656-1728) was a celebrated French composer and virtuoso of the viola da gamba. Born in Paris, he began studying the instrument and joined the French royal orchestra. Under the guidance of Jean-Baptiste Lully and Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, Marais honed his skills as a gamba player.
In 1676, Marais secured a position at the royal court of Versailles, where he achieved moderate success. He became renowned as the leading French composer of viol music, publishing several influential books in this genre. Marais was also among the pioneers of French trio sonatas.
His instrumental works featured descriptive titles, evoking emotions and stories. Marais’ operas, including “Ariane et Bacchus” and “Alcyone,” garnered acclaim. “Alcyone” was particularly praised for its tempest scene.
Marin Marais’ legacy includes his acclaimed collection of “Pièces de viole,” suites for viola da gamba and basso continuo. These works solidified his influence on the instrument’s prominence.
Though details of his personal life are scarce, Marais married Catherine d’Amicourt, and they had 19 children.
