Lorenzo 9 Grosse Kunstlerstudien for Flute-Zimmermann (Leonardo Lorenzo 9 Grand Artist Studies for flute) Leonardo De Lorenzo (1875-1962) was born in Italy and was a virtuoso flautist and respected teacher. Aged 8, he attended the “San Pietro a Majella” Music conservatory in Naples. At 16, he briefly moved to the USA before returning to join the military service band in Italy. Lorenzo then built a career touring his native country as well as Germany, UK and South Africa. Aged 25, he joined an orchestra in Cape Town. Around 1907, Lorenzo became the Principal flautist of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Gustav Mahler. He also deputised for Georges Barrère in the New York Symphony Orchestra as well as performing for the NYP, he was also flautist of the orchestras of Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Rochester. Alongside his performing, Lorenzo was professor for flute at the Eastman School of Music from 1923-1935. During this time, he taught American flautist, Julius Baker who became a renowned flautist of his generation. (Some notes taken from Wikipedia)
