About
The 12 Sonatas for transverse flute and bass were first published in Amsterdam in 1723 and received a positive reception.
These sonatas demonstrate elements of the emerging style galant, characterised by surprising phrases and a wide range of expression. Stylistically, this collection makes a valuable contribution to the genre of the solo sonata, which was gaining prominence over the trio sonata during that period.
Pietro Locatelli
Pietro Locatelli (1695-1764) was an Italian violinist and composer renowned for his virtuosic approach to the violin, expanding its technical possibilities. His notable work, L’Arte del Violino, comprises 12 violin concerti along with 24 capriccios ad libitum for solo violin.
At just 14 years old, Locatelli joined the instrumental ensemble of Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo. Two years later, he travelled to Rome, possibly to study with Arcangelo Corelli, although he might have studied with other esteemed musicians in the city. He toured extensively, refining his skills, and eventually settled in Amsterdam around 1729. There, he focused on regular concerts for wealthy amateurs and published his works within the vibrant Dutch music publishing tradition.
Locatelli’s playing was acclaimed for his adept use of double stops and inventive use of special tunings for unique effects. Some of his bravura passages in studies and caprices foreshadowed Niccolo Paganini’s technical feats, occasionally emphasizing technical prowess over musical content. As a composer, he gravitated towards sonatas and concertos, displaying his capacity for elegant and expressive melodies.
