About
Commissioned by flautist Sir James Galway, this virtuosic concerto consists of three movements.
The first movement, Moderato, follows an arc-like form, with all components being variations of its principal theme’s harmonic progression. Its central section features explicit chaconne variations on a chorale version of the progression.
The second movement, Adagio molto, showcases a lyrical melody extended over a pulsating syncopated ostinato throughout the entire movement.
The final movement, Presto, is a virtuoso showcase for the flautist, adopting a rondo-like structure and concluding with a Prestissimo coda.
