Composer-Ernst Levy
Ernst Levy (1895-1981) was a Swiss musicologist, composer, pianist, and conductor.
He was born in Basel, Switzerland, and received musical training from Hans Huber, Egon Petri, and Raoul Pugno.
Levy’s expertise in musicology and teaching led him to the United States, where he became a citizen and taught at prestigious institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Chicago, and the New England Conservatory. One of his notable students was the composer Hazel Ghazarian Skaggs.
After a successful career in academia, Levy retired in 1966 and returned to his homeland, Switzerland, where he lived until his passing in Morges.
In 1985, Levy’s book, “A Theory of Harmony,” was published, introducing contemporary compositional concepts, including his innovative idea of harmonic “undertones.”
