Kreutzer 43 Studies or Caprices for Violin
Kreutzer 43 Studies or Caprices for Violin
About
Almost every violinist encounters the 42 ‘Kreutzer etudes’ at some point in their career, as Études ou caprices are a staple in the standard repertoire. Rodolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831) is particularly remembered for Beethoven’s violin sonata bearing his name, despite never performing it himself and not holding it in high regard. His rapid rise as a violin virtuoso brought him to Napoleon’s private orchestra and stages across Europe until an accident concluded his solo career. Transitioning to teaching, Kreutzer imparted his knowledge in exclusive circles and later at the Conservatoire, establishing a comprehensive methodology and didactics.
In 1796, for his teaching endeavors, Kreutzer composed his 40 Études ou caprices (later augmented by two more). This urtext edition adheres to the original first edition, presenting the occasionally distinct musical text with original fingering, supplemented by a ‘modern’ setting.
