James Galway presents Koehler 15 Easy Exercises Opus 33, Book One
Ernesto Köhler
Ernesto Köhler (1849-1907) was an accomplished Italian flautist and composer. His contributions as a composer for flute are noteworthy, including over 100 works for the flute including études, duets, and solos. Kohler also composed several operas and ballets.
From Modena, Köhler received flute lessons from his father, Venceslau Joseph Köhler, who held the position of the Principal Flute in the Duke of Modena’s orchestra. In 1869, he ventured to Vienna where he began his career as a flautist. Later, he joined the Imperial Opera Orchestra in Saint Petersburg in 1871.
Among flute players, he gained recognition for his widely appreciated ‘Flute School’ (“Flöten-Schule” circa 1880), a popular flute learning method. Additionally, his Opus 33, “Progress in Flute Playing,” a series of three progressive instructional books for flautists published in the 1880s, became highly regarded.
Interestingly, Köhler also made connections within the mandolin community. He is credited with creating an early mandolin method called “Mandolinen Schule, self-instructor for the mandolin,” which was first published in 1887.
