About
Hofmann was an immensely prolific composer of instrumental music, and his collection of solo concertos, amounting to nearly sixty pieces for various instruments, stands out as some of the finest works produced in Vienna during the mid-18th century.
Leopold Hofmann
Leopold Hofmann (1738-1793) was an Austrian composer of classical music. He came from a family of highly educated civil servants and began his musical journey at the age of seven as a chorister in the chapel of Empress Elisabeth Christine, where he likely received guidance from the choral director and teacher František Tůma.
Hofmann later studied under Georg Christoph Wagenseil and Giuseppe Trani (violin) and pursued various studies in violin, harpsichord, and composition.
In 1758, Hofmann secured one of his early appointments as “Musicus” at St. Michael’s. He then became choral director at St. Peter’s Church in 1764 and, in 1766, kapellmeister. By 1769, he was teaching the royal family.
In 1772, Hofmann took on the role of Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of St. Stephan. He had declined the directorship of the Imperial Chapel at that time but applied for it in 1774, without success. (Giuseppe Bonno was appointed director of the Imperial Chapel instead.)
On 9 May 1791, Mozart was appointed assistant-Kapellmeister to Hofmann upon the latter’s request, in an unpaid capacity. Mozart expected to become Kapellmeister after Hofmann’s death, but Hofmann outlived Mozart and retained his post as Cathedral Kapellmeister until he passed away.
