Franz Anton Hoffmeister
Franz Anton Hoffmeister (1754-1812) was an Austrian composer and music publisher. He began his musical journey after moving to Vienna at the age of fourteen to study law but soon found his true passion in music composition. By the 1780s, Hoffmeister had become one of Vienna’s most sought-after composers, earning acclaim for his diverse and extensive catalogue of works.
He composed a vast array of music including eight operas, over 50 symphonies, numerous concertos, string chamber music, piano music and several songs. Hoffmesiter also wrote more than 25 concertos for flute as well as chamber works with the flute in a leading role.
While Hoffmeister’s compositions gained recognition, his most lasting impact on the music world came through his activities as a music publisher. In 1785, he established one of Vienna’s earliest music publishing businesses, positioning it as a significant competitor to Artaria & Co. He not only published his own compositions but also showcased the works of renowned composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Clementi, and others. Among these esteemed composers, Mozart and Beethoven stood as personal friends, with Mozart dedicating his String Quartet in D to Hoffmeister, and Beethoven addressing him affectionately as his “most beloved brother.”
However, as the 1790s approached, Hoffmeister’s focus gradually shifted towards composition, resulting in a decline in his publishing activities.
