About
A thrilling suite from Robert Hinchliffe, The Elements is everything it’s name promises it to be: spirited, tranqil, sometimes strict in timing, sometimes free and flowing, but ever reflective of The Elements.
Robert Hinchcliffe
Robert studied oboe at the Royal College of Music under Sidney Sutcliffe. Upon completing his 4-year course at The Royal College, he embarked on a freelance career. This involved collaborations with ensembles like the Royal Ballet Touring Company, the International Chamber Orchestra of the Cyprus Music Workshop, and a year as Sub-Principal Oboe with the National Symphony Orchestra of Iceland. Additionally, he was an Oboist with the Arradon Ensemble, a group led by Brian Ferneyhough, specialising in 20th Century repertoire.
Later, Robert chose to diversify his musical pursuits, delving more into composition while also undertaking a one-year course in instrumental teaching at Bretton Hall College. This path led him to a post in the Instrumental Teaching Service in Berkshire. Over time, he has remained actively involved in various musical endeavours, notably as an oboist with Collage Chamber Ensemble, where he regularly performed and broadcasted throughout the UK and Europe. With Collage, his compositions found a platform, as he penned numerous pieces for the group, which boasted a wide repertoire spanning from Baroque Trio Sonatas to the Avant-Garde. Collage also commissioned works from notable composers like Robert Saxton, Anthony Powers, Jonathan Lloyd, and Jonty Harrison.
As a composer, Robert has received numerous commissions, showcasing his versatility with pieces ranging from children’s musicals to full symphonic works. His compositions have been performed at prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall, the Purcell Room, St John’s Smith Square, the Festival Hall, and the Fairfield Halls. His works have also been broadcasted both nationally and internationally. Additionally, Robert has held senior teaching positions in Berkshire, East Sussex, and West Sussex, while continuing to perform in orchestras, chamber music, and increasingly as a soloist.
