About
This composition comprises a two-movement work for flute and piano, showcasing Gubaidulina’s diverse writing styles. Both pieces offer an enjoyable listening experience and exhibit distinct character when played. Written at different stages of her life, the first movement represents her earlier period, emphasising traditional textural treatments for the two instruments. Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina
Sofia Asgatovna Gubaidulina (1931-) is a Soviet-Russian composer and a highly esteemed international figure in the world of music. Her works have been commissioned and performed by major orchestras worldwide, solidifying her position as one of the foremost Russian composers of the latter half of the 20th century. Born in Chistopol, Tatar Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (now the Republic of Tatarstan), to a diverse family, she showed an early passion for music and composition.
Her immersion in spiritual ideas from an early age led her to explore spiritually-based concepts in her later compositions. Despite the challenges of studying modern Western music in the Soviet Union, Gubaidulina persevered and garnered support from Dmitri Shostakovich.
Her fame grew internationally in the 1980s, and she became renowned for works such as the violin concerto Offertorium and the homage to T. S. Eliot, using text from Four Quartets. In 2000, she contributed the Johannes-Passion to the Passion 2000 project, and in 2003, she became the first female composer featured in the Rheingau Musik Festival’s annual Komponistenporträt. Since 1992, Gubaidulina has resided in Hamburg, Germany, and is a member of esteemed musical academies.
