American composer, Charles Tomlison Griffes (1884-1920) studied on piano and organ. He then went to Berlin to study with pianist Ernst Jedliczka at the Stern Conservatory and was also mentored by composer Engelbert Humperdinck. He was fascinated the French Impressionists, contemporary Russian composers and the music of Japan. His compositional output was fairly impressive despite him living a relatively short life.
