Edvard Grieg
Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843-1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist who played a pivotal role in establishing the Norwegian nationalist school of music. Born in Bergen to a family of Scottish origin, Grieg showed early talent in music, receiving piano lessons from his mother and later studying at the Leipzig Conservatory.
Influenced by the traditions of Mendelssohn and Schumann, Grieg’s compositions were rooted in the national folk tradition of Norway. His notable works include the Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16, the String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 27, and the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play Peer Gynt, Op. 23. Grieg’s music showcased refined lyrical sensibility, spirited rhythms with folk song associations, and harmonies that were considered novel.
His compositions brought Norwegian folk music to international fame and contributed to the development of national identity
