Charles Gounod
Charles Gounod (1818-1893) was a renowned French composer known primarily for his operas, with Faust being his most famous work. Gounod received early musical training from his talented pianist mother and later studied under Anton Reicha and renowned composers Fromental Halévy and Jean-François Lesueur at the Paris Conservatoire. He won the Prix de Rome for music and spent three years in Rome, where he immersed himself in the works of Giovanni da Palestrina. Gounod’s career took him to Vienna, Paris, and various European cities, and he became a respected organist and choirmaster in Paris.
Although Gounod’s early operas, such as Sapho and La Nonne sanglante, received mixed reviews, his breakthrough came with Faust, based on Goethe’s tragedy, which premiered in 1859 and transformed French opera.
Despite subsequent stage works like Philémon et Baucis, La Colombe, Mireille, and Roméo et Juliette, Faust remained his crowning achievement. Gounod also composed choral works, including masses, and was the conductor of the Orphéon Choral Society in Paris. During his time in London, he focused on writing oratorios, such as Gallia, La Rédemption, and Mors et Vita. Gounod’s compositions showcased his original melodic style, skilful orchestration, and a blend of sacred and secular elements.
Gounod’s enduring legacy includes the famous Meditation (Ave Maria), which overlays his inventive melody onto Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude in C Major.
