Mauro Giuseppe Sergio Pantaleo Giuliani
Giuliani (1781-1829) was an Italian guitarist, cellist, singer, and composer. He emerged as a leading guitar virtuoso during the early 19th century. Born in Bisceglie, Giuliani’s main place of study was in Barletta, where he moved with his brother Nicola at a young age. He initially received training on the cello and possibly the violin before dedicating himself to the guitar, quickly becoming a skilled performer.
Giuliani’s musical journey took him to Vienna, where he acquainted himself with the classical instrumental style. He gained recognition for his exceptional talent and refined musical taste, touring extensively throughout Europe and collaborating with prominent figures such as Rossini and Beethoven. He played a significant role in establishing the guitar as a respected instrument in European music. Giuliani enjoyed success as a composer, with many of his works published by the renowned Artaria publisher. He also pursued a teaching career, instructing several notable students.
Financial reasons led Giuliani to leave Vienna in 1819, eventually settling in Rome. Though his time in Rome was less fruitful, he did find more success in Naples, where he published additional guitar compositions and performed for the Bourbon court.
