George Haynes Handmade Wood Flute C9041
George Haynes Handmade Wood Flute C9041
About
Shown here is an extremely rare, antique wooden flute made in the early 20th century by George W. Haynes, brother of William S. Haynes. Both brothers founded the William S. Haynes Company in Boston in 1888, but around 1920, George Haynes established his own company in New York.
This flute, dating from about 1920, is made of grenadilla wood with solid silver keywork and tenon protectors. It features an offset G, C foot, and closed holes, and is housed in a luxurious vintage Morocco leather case. George Haynes produced far fewer wood flutes compared to metal ones, and it is believed that fewer than a dozen of his wooden flutes
have survived to this day.
This flute is extremely responsive and easy to play across all registers, offering a focused and well-projected sound. Unlike metal flutes, its tone is less edgy, making it particularly suitable for chamber and solo performances, as well as orchestral playing for players who want a more rounded and mellow sound. It allows for nuanced expression and excellent dynamic control.
Condition
Both the wood and mechanism of this flute are in excellent condition. The instrument has been overhauled, though it could benefit from a padding check to ensure perfect sealing.

George Haynes (Flute Maker)
George W. Haynes was a pioneering flute maker, known for his superior craftsmanship and innovative designs. In 1898, he patented the drawn tone hole design, perfecting it by 1913. These advancements revolutionized flute-making, setting new standards for quality and performance. His flutes are much rarer and more sought after than those of his brother, William S. Haynes.
