George Cloos Earliest Known Wood Flute-C9040
About
Presenting the earliest known wood flute by George Cloos, serial number #22, a remarkable piece of American musical history.
This historic flute is crafted entirely from wood, including the body and head joint, providing a warm, rich tonal quality characteristic of early flutes.
A particularly striking feature is the beautifully engraved silver lip plate, which not only enhances the instrument’s aesthetic appeal but also contributes to its notably projected sound. The riser remains wooden, maintaining the flute’s overall tonal warmth and richness. The flute features a C foot joint and closed hole, adding to its traditional design and ease of playability.
It embodies the tonal qualities reminiscent of Baroque instruments, a sweet, focused, clear tone, with a balanced blend across registers. These characteristics make it ideal for playing Baroque repertoire with authenticity and expressiveness.
George Cloos
In 1857, George Cloos moved to New York City to live with his brother, Gotthard. Through Gotthard, George met William Bauer, a flute maker who became a close friend. When Gotthard left the city, George remained and established his own flute-making company around 1862. He spent the rest of his life in New York, where his two sons eventually joined the business. Cloos also made flutes, piccolos, fifes, and clarinets.
This flute is presumed to date from that period and is one of the earliest American Boehm system flutes, making it an exceptional find for collectors and musicians alike.
Condition
Once restored, the flute promises to be a superb instrument both historically and musically.
