Composer-Jean Françaix
French composer and pianist, Jean Françaix (1912-1997). Aged 10, Françaix received his first harmony lessons from the renowned composer, Nadia Boulanger. On the advice of Maurice Ravel, he later went on to study at the Paris Conservatoire winning a number of prizes. From 1959-1962, Françaix taught at the Ecole Normale de Musique in Paris.
He composed a wide range of works including operas, ballets, chamber music, orchestral works, solo concerti, film music and vocal works. Francaix particularly liked writing for wind instruments.
As a pianist, Francaix continued to perform in concert right up until his death in 1997.
