Born in Liverpool, England, Geoffrey was a leading flautist of the 20th century. He was the main participant in the movement from wooden to silver flutes in England.  Gilbert became principle flautist of the Royal Philharmonic orchestra at the age of 19. He later played with the London Symphony Orchestra and founded the Wigmore Ensemble. He also played the British premier of the Ibert, Nielsen and Jolivet concerto. This book teaches everything about technique that could possible by needed. There are chapters on breathing and blowing control. Embouchure, and how to produce different sounds and colours. Articulation, fundamental technique and most importantly, useful practice. Numerous illustrations of hand, body and head positions really guide the reader and further explain points in the text. As well as explaining the practice of technique, the book delivers in depth biographical information on Gilbert’s life. This covers information such as the people who  influenced him and his achievements.  You get a taste of Gilbert’s playing philosophy alongside his concepts and methods used in his teaching. More than 50 photographs depicting Gilbert’s life and techniques alongside a discography list complete the book.  Gilbert was a great Flautist and educator, who played a big part transforming the practice of English flute playing.  All in all, a very informative book.
