Ernst von Dohnányi
Dohnányi, also known as Hungarian Ernő Dohnányi, was a composer, pianist, and conductor. He is best known for his “Variations on a Nursery Song” for piano and orchestra.
Starting his journey at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest, Dohnányi’s first symphony was performed in 1897. As a pianist, he quickly gained recognition as one of the top performers of his time. Additionally, he held teaching positions at the Berlin Academy for Music from 1908 to 1915 and took on the roles of conductor for the Budapest Philharmonic and associate director of the Budapest Academy of Music in 1919. Later, in 1931, he served as the musical director of Hungarian radio.
However, due to political reasons, Dohnányi left Hungary in 1948 as a political exile. His association with the prewar regime resulted in his music being banned in communist Hungary for over a decade. He continued his musical journey by teaching in Argentina and assuming the position of composer-in-residence at Florida State University from 1949. Finally, in 1955, he became a U.S. citizen.
Dohnányi’s music, influenced primarily by Johannes Brahms, is characterized by a late Romantic and conservative style. While his prominence among contemporary Hungarian composers diminished after 1910, he left a lasting impact through notable works such as “Ruralia Hungarica” for violin, three symphonies, a ballet, the Suite in F-sharp Minor, three operas, and various chamber works, including the Second String Quartet and two piano and string quintets.
