About
Devienne composed his Flute Concerto No. 7 in E minor between 1787 and 1788. Among the seventeen concertos he created, only three were written in a minor key. This concerto holds a significant reputation as one of the most cherished French flute concertos from the latter half of the 18th century.
François Devienne
Devienne (1759-1803), was a notable French composer and flautist of the Classical era. He was also a Professor of flute at the Paris Conservatoire. As well as being an active flute player on the Paris playing scene, he also played bassoon at the Paris Opera.
He wrote around 300 works mainly for wind instruments. These comprise of 12 flute concertos, woodwind sinfonia, 5 bassoon concertos, 6 bassoon sonatas, 6 oboe sonatas and numerous trios and quartets for various combinations. He also wrote 12 operas amongst other works. Devienne was known as the French Mozart.
Devienne’s contributions to the development of the flute as a solo instrument was highly influential as he expanded its technical capabilities and explored new expressive possibilities.
