Karl Yulievich Davydov
Karl Yulievich Davydov (1838-1889) was a renowned Russian cellist and composer, recognised by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky as the “czar of cellists.”
He made significant contributions to the world of music, particularly for the cello. Karl pursued his passion for music alongside his studies in mathematics at St. Petersburg University. He later studied composition under Moritz Hauptmann at the Leipzig Conservatory.
Karl embarked on a successful career as a full-time cello soloist in 1850 while continuing to compose. In 1863, he joined the St Petersburg Conservatory as a Professor of cello and eventually became its Director in 1878. He had connections with prominent composers, musicians, and nobility, and he received prestigious dedications and in 1880, the renowned composer Tchaikovsky honoured Karl Davydov by dedicating his Italian Capriccio, Op. 45, to him.
Karl Davydov’s contributions extended beyond performance and composition, as he authored a renowned “cello school” book of etudes and technique.
He played a Stradivarius ‘cello that is now owned by Yo-Yo Ma. An International ‘cello competition is now held in his name every year.
