Arcangelo Corelli
Corelli (1653-1713) was an influential Italian violinist and composer known for his violin style and compositions, including the 12 Concerti Grossi. His contributions played a significant role in popularising the concerto grosso format.
Between 1666 and 1667, he studied with Giovanni Benvenuti, a violinist from the chapel of San Petronio in Bologna. Benvenuti introduced Corelli to the fundamental principles of the violin. Corelli’s education was further advanced by another violinist named Leonardo Brugnoli.
Following his studies, Corelli became a member of the Philharmonic Academy of Bologna in 1670. He later relocated to Rome, where he established himself as a prominent violinist and composer.
Throughout his career, Corelli composed and published various works, including the 12 Church Trio Sonatas, Opus 3, and the 12 Chamber Trio Sonatas, Opus 4. His Opus 6, consisting of 12 concerti grossi, was published posthumously in Amsterdam.
Arcangelo Corelli’s mastery of the violin and his significant contributions to Baroque music left a lasting impact on the development of the genre.
