The challenge of trying something new always appealed to Copland. He accepted a commission from a Professor at the Paris Conservatoire for a vocalise-etude. The song without text was premiered by Ethel Codd Luening with the composer at the keyboard.

Copland (1900-1990) was a highly esteemed American composer, conductor and teacher. His compositions spanned orchestral pieces, ballets, film scores, chamber music, and solo works, showcasing his versatility and creativity. Copland’s works are characterised by their evocative melodies, distinctive harmonies, and uniquely American sound.
Copland’s most renowned works include Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo, his Fanfare for the Common Man and Third Symphony.
