Arnold Cooke
British composer, Arnold Atkinson Cooke (1906-2005) was known for his substantial output of chamber music, orchestral works, and operas. Born in West Yorkshire, Cooke was educated at Cambridge University, where he studied history before switching to music. He furthered his training at the Berlin University of the Arts under Paul Hindemith, whose influence shaped much of his mature style.
Cooke’s music, particularly in the 1930s, evolved from a style influenced by English composers like Elgar and John Ireland. By 1937, his sound began to settle into a distinctive voice, incorporating elements from Hindemith, Bartók, Shostakovich, and Brahms, with a characteristic English lyricism.
His prolific chamber music output includes five string quartets, a clarinet quintet, and numerous sonatas, much of which has only recently been recorded. Cooke also composed two operas—Mary Barton (1954) and The Invisible Duke (1976)—though neither has yet been performed. His symphonic works include six symphonies and several concertos, with recordings available on the Lyrita label. Notable among these are two clarinet concertos, with the first recorded in 1956.
Cooke’s teaching career included a professorship at the RNCM, and he also served as musical director of the Festival Theatre in Cambridge.
