Cesare Ciardi

Ciardi (1818-1877) was an Italian flautist and composer. Born in Prato to a Tuscan family, Ciardi eventually settled in 1853 in Russia. He was appointed in 1862 as a professor at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and became Tchaikovsky’s flute teacher. Ciardi himself played as the first flute in the orchestras of the Imperial Theatres in Saint Petersburg, including the orchestra of the Imperial Italian Opera and that of the Imperial Bolshoi Kamenny Theatre. His passing occurred in Strel’na, with Ernesto Köhler assuming his position in the orchestra.

In addition to his musical talents, Ciardi was also a sculptor and caricaturist.

Jean-Louis Beaumadier

Beaumadier, an acclaimed flautist and piccolo player, began his musical journey under the guidance of Joseph Rampal at the Marseille Conservatoire. He further honed his skills at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique De Paris with Jean-Pierre Rampal. Recognised for his talent, he achieved international acclaim by winning prizes in competitions in Geneva and Paris, solidifying his reputation as one of the world’s leading piccolo players. Notable accomplishments include a twelve-year tenure as a piccolo soloist with the Orchestre National de France, a distinguished discography honoured with the Grand Prix of the Académie Charles Cros, and the publication of his renowned piccolo scores by Billaudot editions.

Beaumadier’s deep passion for the piccolo and wooden instruments originated from his youth when his family presented him with a splendid French ebony “Bonneville” piccolo. He devoted himself to promoting and sharing his love for the instrument, investing years in studying the art of the piccolo. Throughout his career, he performed as a piccolo soloist under esteemed conductors such as Sergiù Celibidache, Leonard Bernstein, and Claudio Abbado, collaborating with orchestras worldwide, including the Saïto Kinen Orchestra conducted by Seiji Ozawa. With an extensive discography encompassing labels like Skarbo, Calliope-Harmonia-Mundi, and Naïve, Beaumadier’s thirty critically acclaimed CDs include his notable work, “The Golden Age of Piccolo,” which earned him the International Grand Prize from the Charles Cros Academy.
