Frédéric Chopin
Polish composer, Frédéric François Chopin (1810-1849) was a virtuoso pianist of the Romantic era who wrote primarily for solo piano. He was a child prodigy and completed his musical education in Warsaw before settling in Paris in 1830. Chopin was revered by many of his contemporaries including Robert Schumann and became firm friends with Franz Liszt.
The majority of his works include pieces for solo piano including mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, études, impromptus, scherzos, preludes and sonatas. Other pieces include chamber works, songs and two piano concertos. Most of his works are technically demanding but beautifully expressive with influences of Polish folk music and classical influences of Mozart, Schubert and JS Bach. Chopin died in Paris in 1849 at the age of 39 due to ill health. He has remained one of the most important composers of the Romantic era.
