Anne Boyd-Composer
Esteemed Australian composer/music educator, Anne Boyd AM studied at the University of Sydney with Peter Sculthorpe. Moreover, supported by a Commonwealth Scholarship, she pursued a PhD in composition at the University of York (1969-72) under the guidance of Wilfrid Mellers and Bernard Rands.
In 1990, Boyd achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming the first Australian and the first woman to be appointed as a Professor of Music at the University of Sydney. Prior to this remarkable accomplishment, she served as the founding Head of the Department of Music at the University of Hong Kong (1981–90) and also taught at the University of Sussex (1972–77).
Boyd’s musical style is distinguished by its clarity, gentleness, and delicacy, which are deeply influenced by her engagement with Asian traditions, particularly those of Japan and Indonesia.
In recognition of her significant contributions, Professor Boyd received the Order of Australia (AM) in 1996, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of York in 2003, the Distinguished Services to Australian Music Award at the APRA-AMC Classical Music Awards in 2005, and the 2014 Sir Bernard Heinz Award for her exceptional service to music in Australia.
